How to Plant Potatoes in East Texas
- 1). Purchase seed potatoes from a garden store in your area. East Texas garden centers will carry the potato types most suited for the region, such as Pontiac potatoes.
- 2). Cut your seed potatoes in sections at least 1½ inches across and 1½ inches deep. Each section should have at least two eyes.
- 3). Place the cut potatoes on a paper towel or in a paper bag. Sprinkle sulfur fungicide, available at garden centers, on the potatoes. This helps prevent rot.
Store these in a paper bag on a cool shelf for three days. - 4). Till the garden soil 1 foot deep with a rotary tiller or a spade. Add fertilizer to the area at the rate according to the label. Texas Gardener's Seeds advises east Texas gardeners to use fertilizer that has a ratio of 1-2-2.
- 5). Distribute the fertilizer evenly through the soil by raking it in. Dig a 6-inch-deep trench with your garden spade.
- 6). Place the potato sections in the trench 1 foot apart from each other. Cover them with 4 inches of soil and water the soil until it is evenly moist.
