How to Open a Driver-Rehabilitation Business

    • 1). Secure financing sufficient to last you at least six months. Unless all your clients are private-pay, you will have to bill insurance, which takes time before you start to see checks. You also have to consider that it will take time to build a steady flow of clients. Be prepared to operate for six months or more before you see any significant revenue flows.

    • 2). Form your business. If you plan to operate as a corporation, limited liability company or limited liability partnership, apply to your secretary of state. If you intend to operate as a partnership or proprietorship, you will need to register a fictitious business name with your county clerk, recorder or registrar. Secretary of state offices as well as county clerks make information and applications available online.

    • 3). Apply to your state department of health for a license to operate a rehabilitation operation. Driver rehabilitation is a form of health care business because clinical practitioners -- usually occupational therapists -- perform licensed services.

    • 4). Establish a billing system. Some clinics do their own billing using medical billing software. However, many start-up and small operations choose to contract billing services which specialize in all the requirements of both government and private insurance plans.

    • 5). Hire clinical staff such as occupational and physical therapists if you plan to be more than a one-man operation. Always check the backgrounds of clinical staff and ensure their licenses are active and unrestricted.

    • 6). Begin soliciting clients. You may already have connections in mind for referrals. However, many driver rehabilitation businesses market themselves to rehabilitation hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, orthopedic surgeons and neurologists in their areas.
