DIY: Wall Kitchen Cabinets
- 1). Look at current trends in kitchen cabinet styles in kitchen design books and remodeling magazines. Review cabinet catalogs and brochures from home improvement stores as well. Decide on color, architectural style and a budget.
- 2). Measure the kitchen. Define space to be used for wall cabinets. Consider placing two or three wall cabinets on each side of the kitchen sink, for example. Place cabinets above the dishwasher, which should be close to the kitchen sink. Draw the cabinets on a sketch pad and convert the drawings to graph paper after final choices have been made.
- 3). Think creatively to give the kitchen cabinets a cutting-edge look. Don't forget to include a tall pantry cabinet that has double doors, for example. Include a few wall cabinets with glass front doors to exhibit china or art collections in the kitchen. Add a hybrid look by using dark cherry cabinets alternated with light oak cabinets. Consider alternating painted black cabinets with painted white cabinets for another unique look.
- 4). Select cabinets that work harmoniously with the kitchen floor, since both areas are large. Use colored pencils to sketch the kitchen in detail to see how two or more colors will work together. Purchase hardware for cabinets that work well with appliances. Use drawer pulls and door knobs in stainless steel, for example, if appliances are stainless steel.
- 5). Purchase storage accessories, such as glide-out shelves, to organize wall cabinets better. Incorporate a lazy susan in a corner cabinet as well. Visit home improvement stores to review all of the options available.
