DIY Hanger Plants
- 1). Examine the basket for drainage holes if using a plastic basket. If it has no drainage holes, drill or cut three holes about 1/2-inch wide in the bottom of the basket, keeping them evenly spaced.
- 2). Prepare the soil. Mix together two parts potting soil and one part sand, which will help improve drainage. Work a balanced, slow-release fertilizer into the soil. Check the fertilizer package for the proper amount to apply to the soil.
- 3). Line a wire basket with a layer of sphagnum moss or sheet moss two inches thick. Place a plastic liner 2mm thick over the moss. Skip this step if you are using a plastic basket.
- 4). Fill the basket with the soil until it's about one inch below the top of the basket.
- 5). Sterilize a trowel in a solution that consists of 1 part chlorine bleach to 10 parts water.
- 6). Dig holes for the plants with the trowel. Place the plants into the holes and fill in the topsoil around them.
- 7). Pour water into the basket until the soil is soaked and allow it to drain. If the soil level sinks, add more soil until it is about an inch below the top of the basket.
- 8). Place the basket in a location where it will receive filtered sunlight for two to three weeks until the plants have become established. At that point, place the basket in a location that provides the best growing conditions for the plants.
- 9). Water the plants when the soil is dry more than 1/4-inch below the surface.
