Slate

• When properly installed, slate tiles last indefinitely. Like marble, slate comes in a variety of gray tones and offers random vein patterns. Marble and slate both provide a natural vibe and go well together. Because slate is naturally antibacterial, the flooring works well in kitchens and baths alike. Use a solid subfloor to prevent cracks, and seal the grout to thwart stains. Choose a dove-gray grout to set off the stone.
  
  

Terrazzo

• Typically used in commercial applications, terrazzo tile offers a contemporary vibe. Because the material gets slippery when wet, terrazzo works on kitchen floors but not as well in bathrooms. With an appearance similar to quartz, the tile consists of marble fragments and cement. Tile manufacturers can make almost any color combination in terrazzo, so you'll have little trouble finding the right hue for your space.
  
  

Concrete

• Although the name conjures up images of a cold surface, concrete tiles can look soft and organic. Composed of stone and sand, the material feels cool underfoot during hot summer months. Like all stone products, concrete tiles probably will outlive you. Maintain the floor's beauty simply by sweeping as needed and applying a sealer every six months.
  
  

Ceramic

• Unlike concrete floors, most homeowners can install ceramic tiles. With a clay base, ceramic tile offers antibacterial properties and works well in both bathrooms and kitchens. Like terrazzo, the floor can get slippery when wet, but ceramic tile comes in both smooth and matte styles; choose a rough surface to avoid slips and falls in the bathroom.
  
  

Limestone

• Limestone tiles come in a variety of colors, including arctic gray. With a variety of random streaks, pits and veins, each tile can vary considerably from one to the next. Limestone generates an earthy vibe, but the surface can scratch. Most nicks and scuffs eventually blend with the rest of the surface.
