How to Grow Potted Tomatoes in Michigan
- 1). Use a 5 gallon bucket for the container. The tomato plant roots will have plenty of room to grow downwards in a bucket of this size.
- 2). Mix the medium for the tomato plant. Use 1 part each of compost, sphagnum peat moss, perlite and potting soil. Add the medium to the container.
- 3). Make a hole in the center of the medium. Gently place the tomato plant in the medium. Move the medium over the roots. Tamp the soil down with your hand so the soil is firm and holds the plant upright.
- 4). Water the plant so that all of the soil is wet. Place the plant in a sunny location. A southern exposure works the best.
- 5). Sprinkle 10-20-10 (nitrogen-phosphate-potassium) granular fertilizer on the tomato plant after one month. Sprinkle at least 1 inch away from the plant stem. Water the plant to dissolve the fertilizer.
