How to Fertilize White Dutch Clover
- 1). Test the soil with a soil test kit to determine the need for fertilizer and lime. Scoop soil samples and place them into the test tubes that come with the kit. Follow the directions on the kit to find out the pH balance and levels of lime, nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients.
- 2). Apply a base fertilizer to the soil in the fall before planting in the spring if the test shows nutrient levels are low. Fill a spreader with a granular form of 20-60-20 fertilizer if soil tests showed low levels of nitrogen and other nutrients.
- 3). Move the spreader over the pasture in rows to cover the area. Repeat the process in perpendicular rows to ensure complete coverage.
- 4). Water the soil to soak the fertilizer into the dirt. Use a sprinkler system to water the soil for 20 to 30 minutes.
- 5). Apply more fertilizer each year after clover is established. Cast the fertilizer in the same manner as you did before planting. You do not have to apply nitrogen to the clover after it is established. The vegetation can fix nitrogen levels on its own.
