    Range and Description

    • Neem is native to Iran, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The plant has been naturalized tropical regions throughout the world and is now commonly found in Australia, Maylasia, Africa and Latin America. Neem is a fast-growing tree that continues to grow in hot, arid environments. Mature trees can reach up to 90 feet and have a wide rounded canopy that provides ample shade. In the United States, neem trees grow in Texas, Florida and Hawaii.

    Medicinal Uses

    • Neem trees have several medicinal uses. The bark is very bitter and can be used as an astringent. The leaves can be crushed and used to make a tea that is effective for treating malaria, peptic ulcers and intestinal parasites. Juices from the leaves can also be applied to eyes to help treat conjunctivitis and night blindness. Twigs improve oral hygiene when chewed and help prevent gum disease. Neem seeds can be crushed and the oil used to treat head lice and other topical parasites of people of animals.

    Agricultural Uses

    • Neem trees are not affected by any pests or diseases due to the presence of azadirachtin in all parts of the tree. Azadirachtin repels and disturbs the growth of insects. The leaves can be crushed and used to make a liquid tea insecticide that is effective at preventing insect infestations on agricultural plants. In addition, the leftover remains of neem seeds can be composted into the soil to provide additional fertilizer and inhibit soil based pests such as nematodes, snails and fungi.

    Care

    • Neem trees are easy to grow in home landscapes. The plants readily germinate from seed and will develop quickly when planted in rich, well-drained soils in full sunlight. Young trees can tolerate some shade, but neem trees require full sunlight to develop properly. Neem trees are highly drought tolerant and do not have any pest or disease problems. They are sensitive to freezing temperatures and should be protected from frost to prevent damage.
