    • 1). Enroll in broadcasting school through a trade school or university in your area. Most professionals in the radio business have a degree in broadcast journalism, communications or a similar program. Holding a degree in your intended field increases your chances of being hired because it demonstrates that you have the education, skills and commitment required to succeed in your intended position as a radio DJ.

    • 2). Apply for at least one internship at your college radio station, or seek internship opportunities at radio stations operating in your area. Experience is key to breaking into the field of morning radio, and successful completion of one or more internship programs provides the background and personal connections you need to advance in the industry. Even if you are not currently enrolled in a broadcast or communications degree program, you may qualify for certain internships. Ask your college program coordinator for assistance setting up an internship program for yourself if necessary.

    • 3). Make a demo tape that properly highlights your radio DJ skills, as suggested by morning radio show host Chris Kellogg. A demo tape of three or four minutes in length is crucial for landing a job as a radio DJ, and it is just as important as having a good resume. Your demo tape shows radio producers and hiring directors how well you perform, the quality of your radio voice and any other skills you may have relevant to the position. If you have already been live on radio, make an air check tape of your best program to showcase your talent.

    • 4). Send copies of your resume and demo tape or air check to radio stations. Search for those who currently have open positions, or reach out and make connections for the future. Remember the field of radio can be competitive, and you must be willing to accept a position reading the news, traffic or weather. In time, these positions could lead to the morning radio DJ job you desire.
