What Tree Bears Fruit That Has No Seed?
- Guava fruit is a nutritionally dense fruit grown on trees in India. The trees are large producers and yet require little in the way of care, such as irrigation and fertilization. They thrive in tropical and subtropical regions and in a variety of soils. Not all guava fruit is seedless, but the two most common seedless varieties are the Saharanpur and Nagpur Seedless. Seedless fruit is borne on the new shoots from the stem, while the older stems produce partly seeded fruit.
- Introduced to the United States from Asia in the 19th century, persimmon is used largely as an ornamental tree. It produces both seeded and seedless cultivars. Trees adapted to the cooler parts of the country are considered at their peak for eating when the fruit is soft and jelly-like. Other cultivars bear fruit that is eaten when crisp. Colors vary from yellow to orange-red.
- Orange trees come in a number of cultivars, a handful of which bear parthenocarpic fruits. The most commercial of these are the navel and Valencia oranges, popular for eating and juicing. There is also the Hamlin and the red navel. Different orange trees fruit in different months of the year and can withstand winter temperatures of 24 degrees F.
- In addition to oranges, there are also seedless varieties of lime and grapefruit. The Persian lime is large and seedless and also goes by the name Tahiti lime. It is commercially produced in Florida, but is also ideal for container growing. Seedless grapefruit trees include the cultivars Marsh, Thompson Pink, Ruby Red, Ray Ruby, Flame Red and Rio Red. The trees are ideal as shade trees as they can reach the size of an oak.
