Installation Steps for Crown Molding
- 1). Have a friend help you measure the perimeter of the room with a measuring tape. Bring these measurements with you when you purchase the crown molding so you know how much to buy. Always buy extra to allow for mistakes.
- 2). Measure the wall with a measuring tape and transfer the measurements to the crown molding with a pencil.
- 3). Use a compound miter saw to cut corners on the molding. Set the molding upside down on the miter saw so the top of the molding is on the table of the saw and the bottom of the molding is resting on the saw fence. Set the saw to a 45-degree angle (check the manufacturer directions of the miter saw). The two pieces of molding that make up the corners will need to be cut in opposite directions so they can form a 90-degree angle.
- 4). Cut the joints of the crown molding. When the molding meets in the middle of a wall, it is called a scarf. To cut a scarf, place the molding flat against the fence of the miter saw. Set the saw at a 45-degree angle and cut both pieces of the molding at the same angle. Once installed and painted, the scarfed joints will hardly be noticeable.
- 5). Nail the crown molding into place with a nail gun. Have a friend hold the molding into place while you nail it into the wall.
- 6). Fill the nail holes with wood putty. Apply a small bead of caulk to the area between the ceiling and the molding as well as the wall and the molding. Use your finger to smooth the caulk. Allow the caulk and wood putty to dry overnight.
- 7). Paint or stain the crown molding.
