How to Care for Rubber Plants
- 1). Place your rubber plant in a location exposed to bright morning light. The east side of the house is ideal. However, these plants also do fine in low light.
- 2). Grow your rubber plant outdoors if the average daytime temperature ranges from 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Otherwise, raise it indoors. It tolerates night temperatures that drop to as low as 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 3). Irrigate the plant, allowing the soil surface to dry between waterings. The soil your rubber plant is in needs to drain well to prevent root rot.
- 4). Apply a commercial water-soluble fertilizer formulated for houseplants if your rubber tree is indoors. Feed it every eight weeks in the growing season. If your plant is in low light, fertilize it about every four months.
- 5). Head or stake indoor plants if they become lanky. If you choose to prune yours, do so in spring.
- 6). Wipe the leaves with a moist washcloth when they get dusty to keep your rubber plant healthy and the foliage glossy.
- 7). Repot a rubber plant that outgrows its container in late winter or early spring. Use a light houseplant potting mix for good drainage.
