How to Grow a Venus Fly Trap From a Seed
- 1). Examine the seedpod of the Venus flytrap once the flower has withered and the stalk is black. Open the pod and check for black shiny seeds. You should find 20 to 30 seeds in a pod. Pick the pods and remove all seeds.
- 2). Fill peat pots or seed trays with moist peat moss. Sow the seeds on the surface of the peat moss and mist with tepid water. Cover with plastic wrap or cover with a plastic dome to increase humidity and to hold in warmth.
- 3). Place near a sunny window. Monitor closely that the soil does not overheat. The ideal temperature for germinating Venus flytrap is 70 to 85 degrees F. Open the plastic to increase air circulation and to adjust the temperature if they become overheated in the hot afternoon sun.
- 4). Provide 12 to 14 hours of direct or artificial lighting. You can purchase grow lights at your local hardware store, but fluorescent lights work well, too.
- 5). Keep soil evenly moist until seedlings emerge in two to four weeks. Some may take up to two months to germinate.
- 6). Provide good air circulation by partially opening the plastic once seedlings have emerged. Grow them in an old aquarium or a terrarium to maintain the humidity they require. Keep soil moist and mist the plants twice a day.
