How to Paint Silver Steelies
- 1). Detach the Silver Steelie from your automobile using a tire iron. Leave the tire on the rim.
- 2). Scrub the Silver Steelie with a degreaser, using steel wool. Leave no grease or dirt on the wheel, or the priming conditioner won't bond.
- 3). Rinse the Silver Steelie using a hose. Roll the tire into the sun and let it dry for two hours.
- 4). Roll the tire onto a canvas drop cloth and lay it flat so the Silver Steelie is face up. Cover the whole tire with masking paper. Tape the paper in place using painter's masking tape.
- 5). Spray the Silver Steelie with a light coat of galvanized metal-etching spray primer. Prevent ugly runs and sagging by holding an 8-inch space between the Silver Steelie and spray tip at all times as you apply. Let the Silver Steelie dry for three hours.
- 6). Encourage adhesion by lightly sanding the dried etching primer with 140-grit sandpaper.
- 7). Wipe the Silver Steelie with a tack cloth to remove unseen primer dust created during the sanding process.
- 8). Spray the Silver Steelie with a light coat of oil-based spray enamel. Hold an 8-inch space between the Silver Steelie and spray tip at all times as you apply. Let the Silver Steelie dry for three hours.
