How to Plant & Maintain a Hanging Basket

    • 1). Find a sturdy hanging basket for your plant. If you've never used a basket before, buy one from a store that comes equipped with a pot or moss and a hanging hook.

    • 2). Choose a plant that will do well in a hanging basket. To get the best effect, choose one with leaves that hang down. Two of the most popular types are spider plants and rhododendrons.

    • 3). Place a small amount of potting soil in the bottom of the pot or moss. Pack it down tightly. Fill the rest two-thirds full of potting soil. Make a hole in the soil for the plant.

    • 4). Place the plant into the hanging basket and fill around the edges with loose soil. Pack the soil in around the plant to keep it secure.

    • 5). Hang the hanging basket in a secure location. Make sure the nail or hook you use is strong and hammered in tightly so the basket won't fall down.

    • 6). Water the hanging basket according to the directions for the plant or plants. For best results, take the plant down when you water it so you can get the soil completely wet. Set a hose on a gentle spray, which allows you to water the entire plant without damaging the leaves, or use a watering can. If you use a watering can with a nozzle, spread the water over the leaves. If the can has a spout instead, aim the water down into the soil. Move the basket from one location to another based on the amount of sun it needs or the amount of natural rain water it will get in a certain location. If you are going on vacation, for example, position the plant to get as much rainwater as possible. If the plant itself doesn't need a lot of water, hang it under the eaves for protection.
