How to Build a Book Rack
- 1). Cut two pieces of lumber 20 inches long, 1 inch wide and 1 inch deep. These pieces will be the stretchers.
- 2). Cut four identical pieces of lumber 7 1/2 inches long, 1 inch wide and 1 inch deep. These will be the posts.
- 3). Cut four pieces of lumber 7 inches long, 1 inch wide and 1 inch deep. These pieces are the rails.
- 4). Cut eight identical pieces of lumber 3 1/2 inches long, 1/2 inch wide and 1/2 inch deep. These eight pieces are the slats.
- 5). Use sandpaper to smooth the cut sides.
- 6). Lay two of the four rails in a vertical position with space in between them. Place four of the eight slats in between the rails horizontally. Decide how much space to have between the slats, but keep the outer slats at least 1/4 inch from the ends. Use the screwdriver to connect the slats to the rails. Repeat this step with the other two rails and four slats. The sides are now complete.
- 7). Place one of the finished sides down on the table so the rails are horizontal and the slats are vertical. Place two posts next to one of the sides, so there is a post on each side. The posts should be placed vertically and should leave 1/4 inch between the top of the post and the beginning of the rail on each side. Connect the post to the rails using screws and a screwdriver.
- 8). Repeat this step with the second side and the two remaining posts. The two sides should be identical.
- 9). Connect the stretchers to the finished sides. Place one of the sides down flat. Place one stretcher on the inside of one of the posts so the stretcher points straight up in the air. Push the stretcher into the corner of the post and the rail. Use a screw to secure the stretcher to the post. Repeat this step in the opposite corner with the second stretcher. When connected, the two stretchers should now stick straight up in the air.

Connect the second side using the same method by pushing the stretcher into the corner of the post and the rail. Use the screwdriver to connect the stretcher to the post. Do this for the last corner as well. - 11
Flip the book rack right-side up when done. Place books on the rack and enjoy.
