    Red Ginger

    • Red ginger is a native plant of Malaya that is grown all throughout the tropical Pacific region of the world. Its flowers range in color from light pink to a deep red, almost burgundy, shade. These plants grow very slowly, and may not produce any flowers for up to three years; however, when the red ginger finally blooms, it yields flowers that are about the size of a football and visible year-round.

    Yellow Hibiscus

    • The yellow hibiscus is the state flower of Hawaii, and is a shrub plant that produces bright blooms. You can plant your yellow hibiscus in full sunlight, although the flower will thrive in partial shade as well. It's also acceptable to water the flowers daily, although they don't require much water. Yellow hibiscus plants will flower for up to two months, and flowers will grow each day during the flowering period; the entire plant can grow up to 10 feet tall.

    Canna Lily

    • Canna lilies varieties are available in both bright yellow and red. The flowers have three sepals and three petals that are very small and hidden under the large stamens of the lily, so the petals are often unnoticed. The part of the canna lily that most people think are the petals are actually highly modified reproductive organs (stamens and staminodes) that fold around the stem to give the lily its shape. If you're growing canna lilies, be sure to give them plenty of water and lots of sunlight. The rhizomes of the canna lily are also edible, and are what arrowroot powder is made from.

    Heliconia

    • Heliconia is called the lobster claw plant, and is both red and yellow; the bottom of the bloom is a rich red, and it is accented by a yellow top. This tropical flower grows from underground tubers that can reach up to 8 feet, and the flowers will last for a considerably long time in water once they're cut, making them a practical addition to your indoor flower arrangements. Since the plant is native to warm areas like Central and South America, it can be grown outside when the weather is warm; winter growth in cold areas is best done indoors.
