Order a free credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com. This site was created by the the three major credit-rating agencies, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. You are allowed one free report annually from each agency. These reports do not give a credit score but they will provide you with a list of creditors and the contact information for those creditors.

    • 2). Compare the creditors in the reports with your own statements. It is likely that there will be more names on the report because people do not actively use all of their credit.

    • 3). Call a company using the phone number from the statement of the credit report. Take note of the service representatives name. Confirm that the account has no balance and advise the company that you want to cancel the account. Tell the representative that you are sending a letter confirming your request. Repeat this step for each of the creditors on the report.

    • 4). Compose a short letter to each of the creditors. Use the contact information from the statement or the credit report. You should include your name, address and account number. Request that the credit card company or other creditor notify the rating agencies that this account is being closed at your request.

    • 5). Mail the letters via regular mail and keep a copy of each letter for your records.
