Typical Terra Cotta Planters
- Terra cotta is a ceramic clay that turns a reddish-brown color when exposed to air because of its high iron content. Since it is typically unglazed, the surface of terra cotta pots is porous and absorbs and retains water.
- The majority of terra cotta planters are round and have bottoms that are smaller than the top, with sloping sides. They also are available in bowl, rectangular and square shapes, as well as styles with notched sides to accommodate leggy plants such as strawberries with vines that need exposure to light.
- Terra cotta clay is brittle, so careful handling is required to avoid chipping and cracking the planters. If the planters are exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures, be sure they are labeled as frost or freeze resistant to prevent breakage.
