How do I Compare Car Alarms?
- 1). Compare the car alarms to see which sensors they include. Car alarms come with motion sensors for people who come too close to the vehicle, glass break notifiers, door sensors, and loud sound sensors that causes the alarm to sound if something loud occurs outside of the car. Some alarms also have sensors that trigger the alarm if someone touches the door handle to see if the car is unlocked.
- 2). Check to see if the car alarm has an automatic unlocking mechanism that opens the doors as it disarms the vehicle. Additionally, see if the system locks the car when it re-arms the car alarm; this is called "Automatic Re-arm." If so, check to see if the system has a mechanism to unlock the truck of the car in addition to the doors. An automatic unlocking mechanism allows you to enter the car quickly instead of having to insert a key.
- 3). Review the car alarm features to see if the system has an emergency or car finder button that allows you to sound the alarm when you wish. Consider the sound of the alarm when choosing a system; some alarms play random patterns of sound while others just honk the horn.
- 4). Find out if the car alarm comes with a remote start system. This allows you to start the car from a distance, without the need for a key. While this isn't a necessity, it is convenient.
- 5). Compare the alarm systems to see if they come with a built-in camera to watch the car remotely, one that is hard-wired with a remote shut-off system, or a unit that can track the location of the car. These additional (optional) features can help the owner locate and retrieve the car.
- 6). Compare the prices of the car alarm systems left in your shopping list to see which ones meet your budget. Car alarms, as of August 2010, range in price from about $50 to $850.
