How do I Replace a Windshield in a 2000 GM Truck?
- 1). Contact a GM manufacturer, aftermarket supplier or junkyard to request a replacement windshield that fits the 2000 GM truck. Locate parts dealers in your area, or call the GM service department for a listing of their part dealers. The former will usually be less expensive than the latter.
- 2). Wear safety glasses and utility gloves before handling glass and chemicals.
- 3). Remove the windshield's molding adhesive from inside the truck. Slowly slice the molding at a steady pace all around its perimeter with a windshield or carpenter knife.
- 4). Push on the glass with both hands from inside the truck. The windshield will dislodge itself from its adhesive seal. Ask a helper to stand outside the truck to catch the glass as it dislodges.
- 5). Clean the sticky adhesive film left behind inside the frame. Use mild soap and a rag.
- 6). Apply a thick layer of urethane caulk on the inside of the windshield frame. Have an assistant help place the windshield inside the threshold. Set the bottom half of the windshield, and then lift the upper part of the glass inside the frame.
- 7). Place your body weight on the replacement glass for a few minutes; this will set the windshield in place and force it to adhere to the caulk. It will also create an airtight seal.
- 8). Allow the urethane caulk to dry for 24 to 48 hours.
