How to Winterize Canna
- 1). Trim the foliage and flowers from the stalks before the first frost arrives. If the frost has already occurred, trim off the withered and discolored foliage immediately. Leave 1 inch of the stalk above the lily rhizomes.
- 2). Remove the canna lily rhizomes from the ground with a shovel. Remove all the rhizomes from the ground carefully.
- 3). Spread the rhizomes out in a cool location. Brush the soil off the rhizomes and trim off any dead leaves and debris.
- 4). Store the rhizomes in plastic bags. Punch three to four holes in the bags to allow for circulation. Place a small amount of peat moss in the plastic bags with the canna lily rhizomes.
- 5). Place the plastic bags in a cool location away from frost. Store them in a basement or garage that does not freeze for best results. Avoid storing them in the refrigerator because the temperature will remain too cold.
