How to Tile Over Bricks
- 1). Clean the existing brick with a power drill with a wire brush attachment. The wire brush will remove any loose mortar, dirt or paint from the brick.
- 2). Clean up the dirt and mortar pieces from the floor or ground using a vacuum.
- 3). Mix mortar or thin set in a bucket with water by following the instructions on the package or mortar mix.
- 4). Apply mortar to joints of the brick with a trowel. Fill in small areas at a time to provide a level surface for the tile.
- 5). Apply mortar to the backside of the tile using a trowel. Placed the notched side of the trowel at a 45 degree angle and scrape along the tile to create ridges. This will also provide the proper thickness of mortar that is needed.
- 6). Set the tile in place and press down so that the mortar will bond with the brick.
- 7). Set the second piece of tile in place and put a spacer in between the pieces of tile for the grout.
- 8). Continue to apply mortar and add tiles until the brick is completely covered.
- 9). Wait at least 24 hours for the mortar to dry.
