How to Replace the Valve Cover Gasket in a Geo Metro
- 1). Lift the hood and disconnect the battery. Locate and remove the ignition wire harness and the carburetor. Locate the valve cover and, using the torque wrench, remove the bolts that secure the valve cover. Lift the cover straight up and remove it.
- 2). Remove the old gasket. Depending on how long it has been since it was placed in the seating area, you may have to use a screwdriver to coax it out of the gasket seating area. Once it has been removed, using a scrub brush, automotive cleaner and a clean cloth rag, remove any particles, oil or dirt that is in the gasket seating area.
- 3). Place the new gasket into the gasket seating area. Place gasket sealer on the top, along the edges prior to putting the cover back into place. Using a wrench, tighten the bolts. Do not over-tighten the bolts or the gasket will not fit properly.
- 4). Replace the parts by reversing the steps used to remove the parts. Once all parts are back into place, add oil to the vehicle and let in run idle for 10 to 15 minutes. This will allow the oil to move to the top of the engine.
