    Online Tutorials

    • Online tutorials with step-by-step pictures are one of the best ways to learn jewelry making techniques. Websites such as Beading Daily and How To Make Jewelry (see References) offer written explanations alongside images that help beginning jewelry artists understand the process. Online video sites, such as YouTube, are additional online resources with visual imagery that explains various techniques. Certain bead suppliers, such as Fire Mountain Gems and Beads (see References), dedicate a section of their retail websites to free beading instruction.

    Craft and Bead Store Lessons

    • Craft stores often schedule classes that teach lessons on a variety of jewelry making techniques. Local specialty bead stores are other resources available for learning jewelry making techniques. Bead store owners may offer private lessons to their customers as part of a promotion or as part of their overall service. For those who appreciate a hands-on approach to learning, taking lessons from jewelry artists and designers may be preferable to online tutorials or self-teaching methods.

    Books

    • Books are another helpful resource to learn both beginning and advanced jewelry making techniques. Craft stores, book stores and online retailers offer a wide variety of tutorial books that offer step-by-step illustrations along with written explanations for making specific types of jewelry. For example, one book may offer patterns and stitching information for making beaded flower jewelry, another may offer tips and techniques for making wire jewelry, and still another will teach the reader how to make resin jewelry.

    Beading Magazines

    • Beading magazines are also a resource for jewelry making, but the lessons are limited to the focus in the current issue. Many beading magazines offer brief explanations about basic beading stitches, wire wrapping or other targeted jewelry making information based on the overall focus of the magazine, but lessons that extend beyond the bare minimum are not typically available. Beading magazines offer additional resource articles within the magazine, but these articles often revolve around a specific theme. While both beginning and advanced jewelry makers can learn valuable lessons from beading magazines, the best resource information within the magazine often relates to bead supplier information along with upcoming beading and jewelry show information.
