How to Fix a Windows XP Theme
- 1). Click on "Start" on your Windows XP desktop and select "Control Panel." Click on "Switch to Classic View" on the left side of the window if the Control Panel is currently set to "Category View."
- 2). Double-click on "System" and select the "Advanced" tab. Click the "Settings" button under "Performance."
- 3). Select the "Visual Effects" tab. Locate "Use visual styles on windows and buttons" from the "Custom" field and place a check mark next to it if it is not already checked.
- 4). Click "OK" to close the "Performance Options" window and save your settings. Click "OK" to close the "System Properties" window and save your settings. Exit out of the control panel.
- 5). Click on "Start" and select "My Computer." Click "Tools" in the file menu and select "Folder Options."
- 6). Click the "General" tab and place a radio button next to "Show common tasks in folders" in the "Tasks" field if there is not already a radio button next to the selection. Click "OK" to close the "Folder Options" window and save your settings.
- 7). Right-click in a blank space on your desktop and select "Properties" to open the "Display Properties" menu. Click on the "Appearance" tab. Choose "Windows XP style" from the "Windows and buttons" drop-down menu, if not already chosen. Click "OK" to save your settings.
- 8). Click on "Start" and select "Run." Input "services.msc" and press "Enter." Scroll through the list and locate the "Themes" service. Note that the services are in alphabetical order.
- 9). Double-click "Themes" and choose the "General" tab. Click on the "Startup type" drop-down box and select "Automatic" from the list. Ensure that the "Service status" is currently "Started." Click "Start" if it is not. Click on "OK" to save your settings.

Scroll through the services list and locate "Terminal Services." Double-click on it and choose the "Log On" tab. Highlight your profile from the "Hardware Profile" options and click on "Enable" if the service is not currently enabled. Click on "OK" to save your settings. Close the "Services" window.
