How to Grow Paper Birch Trees From Seed
- 1). Gather ripe paper birch seeds in the fall. The seeds should be firm and free of green spots, mold and evidence of insects.
- 2). Pour about 1 inch of sand into a plastic baggie. Sprinkle 10 to 15 paper birch seeds on top of the sand. Cover the seeds with another 1 or 2 inches of sand.
- 3). Pour about 1/8 cup water into the baggie. Leave it open in a cool place until the water soaks completely into the sand.
- 4). Seal the bag and set it in your freezer for about eight weeks. This is best done in early spring. Paper birch seeds require a cold season to germinate properly.
- 5). Sow the seeds in warm, well-drained soil in mid-spring after the threat of frost has passed. Bury them in 1-inch-deep holes about 4 inches apart. Mulch with a little mature compost to keep the soil warm and moist. Seedlings should appear in about three weeks.
