Winter Care for a Japanese Maple
- 1). Water the tree well for 20 minutes in the fall before the ground freezes over or frost sets in.
- 2). Add a 2- to 3-inch layer of compost around the base of the tree, about 6 feet in diameter. This will help feed the Japanese maple during the long winter months.
- 3). Apply a 4- to 6-inch layer of mulch over the compost to protect the Japanese maple's roots.
- 4). Wrap the trunk of the Japanese maple with burlap and secure it to the tree with twine. This will protect the trunk from wind chill.
