How to Choose an Elderberry
- 1). Choose your elderberry during the right time of year. In the springtime, you'll find lots of white flowers blooming on the elderberry bush. Wait for late summer to choose your elderberry because that's when the berries are ripe and ready for picking.
- 2). Make sure the elderberry bush you're picking from is healthy. Healthy elderberry bushes are full of leaves. The leaves on the bush should be very dense, and the elderberries appear in clusters throughout the leaves.
- 3). Pick ripe elderberries. They are very dark in color, and they're quite small compared to other types of berries. Pull a cluster of elderberries from amongst the leaves. Then, you can pick off the individual elderberries.
