    • 1). Go to the HeroMachine website; there is a link in the References section.

    • 2). Familiarize yourself with the layout. The left box features the hero you are creating. The right boxes feature the tools you'll be using. This includes the "Layer Order," which determines where items fall on your hero, and the "Component" menu, where all of your hero parts are located. The bottom of the menu features a color grid.

    • 3). Select "Pose" in the "Component" menu, then choose one of six poses. You can choose between average, short or muscular. Each pose has two variations: a female and male version. Click the pose you want, and it will appear on the left side.

    • 4). Choose between "Complete" and "Partial" pose loading. Choose "Complete" to preload every part available for your hero. Choose "Partial" to only load parts as you choose the category, which is recommended for users with slow Internet connections.

    • 5). Click the second drop-down box under "Components," then choose "Hair." This option falls directly beneath the "Pose" option. Scroll through the hair choices using the arrows beneath the hair choice menu. Choose the hair you wish to place on your hero and click it.

    • 6). Color in your hair choice by selecting one of the options in the color box. Note that each component can have up to two colors, such as main hair color and highlights. Click the boxes marked 1 and 2 to switch between your choices.

    • 7). Repeat the selection process for the remaining physical features, including eyes, nose and mouth.

    • 8). Select "Undershirt" from the "Component" box and choose the shirt you want your hero to wear. Choose the color from the color menu.

    • 9). Choose additional clothing options for your hero. You can customize the top and bottoms, head gear, gloves and boots, among other features.

Change where an article of clothing falls on your hero by clicking the up and down arrows on the "Layer Order" menu. For example, this option can place your gloves over your overcoat or position your hero's emblem beneath his shirt.

Select "Save" to display a text box of code. Copy and paste the code to save your hero. To edit your hero later, select "Load" and paste in the text.
