How to Replace a Starter on a 1998 Honda Accord

    • 1). Open the engine compartment and disconnect the negative battery terminal by loosening the nut with a wrench. Place the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.

    • 2). Raise the car up on the driver's side and place a jack stand under the frame. Raise the jack stand up to the frame of the car.

    • 3). Remove the lower radiator hose from the bracket on the starter by pulling it off. Tag the electrical wires on the starter using the marker and masking tape as to their proper locations. Disconnect the wires using a wrench to remove the nuts. Unplug the wiring harness from the solenoid. This is the black and white wire.

    • 4). Remove the two mounting bolts from the starter using a ratchet and socket. Pull the starter away from the motor.

    • 5). Put the new starter in place and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet. Reconnect the wires according to the tags you made and tighten the nuts with a wrench. Plug the wiring harness back into the starter solenoid.

    • 6). Remove the jack stand from under the car and lower the car back to the ground.

    • 7). Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten the nut with a wrench. Start the car and test it.
