    Description

    • Aloe vera is a perennial plant whose leaves can hold large amounts of water. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the aloe vera plant grows to 4 feet in height and has spear-like leaves that are 36 inches long. The leaves have a thick gel inside that is used to sooth minor burns and cuts.

    Topical Uses

    • Traditionally used in topical ointments, aloe vera extracts are in wrinkle creams, cosmetics, sun block and other types of lotions. Topical versions of aloe vera treat many skin ailments such as sunburn, eczema and psoriasis.

    Internal Uses

    • The skin of an aloe leaf creates a bitter-tasting substance called aloe juice that relieves symptoms of constipation. While it is a powerful laxative, it can cause severe cramping and is not recommended.
