Painted Holiday Posts

• Make various outdoor decorations for Halloween by painting the wood posts white for ghosts or orange for pumpkins. Add the faces with black paint. Staple or nail green leaves and raffia to the tops of the pumpkins. You may use the white posts during the Christmas season as snowmen by tying a plaid scarf around the neck and adding a top hat. Attract more attention to your creations by circling with a strand of white outdoor twinkle lights.
  
  

Solar Light Posts

• Instead of sticking solar lights along the garden path where they may be kicked or run over with the mower, make a base with wooden posts. Cut a post into three sections of varying lengths of 12 inches, 18 inches and 14 inches, and secure the sections together with wood screws. Tie a heavy rope around the post sections to add dimension to the grouping. Drill a hole in the top of one of the posts and insert the base of a solar light into the hole. Posts made from treated wood are best because they are less susceptible to the elements.
  
  

Hanging Post

• A hanging post is used indoors for coats and hats or outdoors for plants. For indoor use, screw four 12-inch sections of 2-inch by 4-inch lumber around the base of the post in a spiral fashion. This keeps the post upright. For outdoor use, bury the post at least 12 inches into the ground. Fashion the hangers by drilling one-inch holes perpendicularly into the wood post. Secure six-inch sections of a dowel rod into the holes with wood glue. The number of hangers you put on each post is up to you. You may want to angle the dowel rods if you use the post as a coat and hat rack.
  
  

Garden Sign Post

• Direct your guests to different sections of your garden with a sign post. Painted boards, screwed on to the wood post, point the direction to the vegetable garden, the tool shed or other features in your landscape. Wooden cutouts make a cute addition to the sign post, as does a set of twinkle lights and ivy. Other garden signs, which are easily made with a wood post, include "Children At Play" or "Pet Crossing," with toys or paw prints painted on the post.
