Flowering Plants That Will Live in Full Sun
- Annual flowering plants can be started from seed or purchased as bedding plants. They bloom repeatedly in a rainbow of colors throughout the growing season, dying afterwards. Many annual flowering plants will re-seed themselves if they are allowed to mature into seed pods. There are many sun-loving annuals available for your landscape, including cockscomb, marigolds, portulaca, purslane, salvia, snapdragons, sunflowers, torenia and zinnias.
- Once planted and cared for, perennial flowering plants will return to grow and bloom year after year. Most sun-loving flowering perennials won't have the extended bloom time as annuals. In fact, several, such as day lilies, burst into bloom for a day, maybe two, then the blossoms wilt and die. There are flowering perennial plants that will produce an abundance of blooms for several weeks, and possibly more than a month, if the dying blossoms are clipped off the plant. Flowering perennials for sunny locations include purple coneflowers, black-eyed Susan, day lilies, coreopsis, yarrow, cornflowers, hollyhocks, Shasta daisies and blanket flowers.
- Planting sun-loving wildflowers can be one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to add color to a landscape and garden. Wildflowers, particularly plants that are native to your region, are low maintenance once established and will reseed from year to year. Full-sun wildflowers include California poppies, African daisies, calendula, candytuft, evening primrose, sunflowers, morning glory, red poppies, coneflower and Texas bluebonnet.
- Flowering shrubs can add a larger area of color and interest in a landscape. Depending on when the shrub will flower, you can have a flowering shrub blooming from spring through fall. Spring blooming sun-loving shrubs are lilacs, barberry and forsythia. Summer and fall flowering shrubs include dwarf crape myrtle, hawthorne, privet, loropetalum and spirea. Additionally, rosebushes thrive in full sun, giving you an abundance of colorful, fragrant blooms throughout the summer season.
