How to Use an Alcohol Hydrometer

    • 1). Gather a sample of your unfermented liquid you want to test and pour it into a graduated cylinder. Fill the cylinder 2/3 of the way full.

    • 2). Insert your hydrometer into the cylinder. Spin it gently in your fingers to remove any air bubbles from the sides of the hydrometer or container.

    • 3). Lower yourself so that your eyes are parallel to the container. Read the measurement on the hydrometer to see where the top of the liquid hits it. This is your specific gravity measurement.

    • 4). Take the measurement of your alcoholic liquid after the fermentation process is complete. Subtract this measurement from your first measurement and divide it by 0.75 to find out your ABV (alcohol by volume).
