    Portable Systems

    • Portable GPS devices are compact systems that can be used in all types of vehicles, and can be transported from car to car or carried with you when traveling on foot. Portable systems generally do not offer all of the features that a built-in GPS provides, but features vary by model. Portable systems range in price from about $80 to $400 (as of October 2010), with the higher-end models offering real-time traffic reporting and voice-command functions. These units securely mount to the car, have a rechargeable battery and charge by connecting to a power outlet.

    Aftermarket In-Dash Systems

    • If you want a built-in GPS system, but do not want to buy a new car or settle for the factory version, aftermarket in-dash systems are an option. They provide drivers with real-time traffic conditions along the route and can even play DVDs. Some systems include a feature that retracts the GPS into the dash so that it remains out of sight when you are not using it. The average price of an aftermarket in-dash system averages from $450 to $1,600 (as of October 2010).

    Built-in Factory Systems

    • When purchasing a new car, a built-in factory GPS system is usually an optional feature. The average value of one of these systems is $2,000, but usually come bundled with other options so that you spend the minimum of $3,000 (as of October 2010). While these systems have large screens and integrate seamlessly into the car, they are the most expensive type of navigation system. In addition, updating the maps can cost hundreds of dollars and it is more difficult to upgrade when new technology is released.
