    • 1). Park the 4Runner on a flat surface and set the parking brake. Loosen the front lug nuts with the lug wrench by turning them one-quarter to one-half turn.

    • 2). Place the jack under the front frame of the vehicle and jack it up. Place jack stands under the front axles.

    • 3). Finish removing the lug nuts. Remove the wheel.

    • 4). Remove the two bolts holding the brake caliper in place with a socket wrench. Carefully place the caliper on the axle arm. Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake fluid line. This will damage the braking system.

    • 5). Push in on the brake pads to compress the caliper piston. If the piston doesn't retract easily, place a C-clamp on the pad and tighten it down. Once the piston is compressed, remove the C-clamp.

    • 6). Lift up on the clips holding the brake pads in place. Slide the brake pads off. If the brake pads are stuck, use a screwdriver to pry them off. Carefully slide the screwdriver underneath the pad and lift slowly. Don't use too much force. Slipping could cause the screwdriver to damage the rotor or other parts.

    • 7). Add a small amount of silicone grease to the back of the new brake pads and put them in place. Set the clips that hold the brake pads and make sure they are secure. Reattach the caliper and tighten the bolts.

    • 8). Place the wheel back on the axle. Tighten the lug nuts most of the way, but not completely. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle before you finish tightening the lug nuts. Check the brake fluid levels and replace, if necessary.
