How to Harvest a Blanket Flower Seed

    • 1). Observe the blanket flower field or bed and look for ripe, fuzzy seed heads. The ripest heads are likely missing some of the fuzzy seeds that were ripe enough to fall to the ground.

    • 2). Bend the seed head over your paper bag, pull or prune it off of the plant and deposit it into the bag. Holding the bag under the seed head as you prune will help you catch any ripe seed that drops.

    • 3). Shake the dried heads vigorously in the bag. The most mature seeds will fall from the seed head and into the bottom of the bag.

    • 4). Wrap electrical tape around the blades of a food processor.

    • 5). Place seed heads with clinging seed into the food processor. Pulse the processor several times to dislodge the seed.

    • 6). Spread the collected seed out on newspaper, indoors in a room with plenty of access to sunlight and air circulation. Leave the seed to dry for 72 hours. Stir the seed around with your hands once or twice daily to facilitate even drying.

    • 7). Separate the seed from the chaff.

    • 8). Place the seed in a plastic container.

    • 9). Place the container in the refrigerator to store the seed until it is ready for sale or planting in spring.
