How to Build a Wooden Storage Box for Garbage Can Storage
- 1). Measure how large the wooden storage box needs to be. Use the garbage cans and the recycling bin to determine the box's overall height, length and depth. Write these measurements down.
- 2). Put the plywood sheet down on a flat surface and use the pencil to draw the required pieces for the box. Draw the two side pieces for the box using the height and depth measurements. Draw the front and back piece of the box using the length and height measurements. Draw the bottom and lid piece of the box by using the length measurement and the width plus one additional inch.
- 3). Cut out all six pieces with the electrical saw and sandpaper the edges to remove any splinters or potential cracks.
- 4). Place one of the two side pieces on its 1/2-inch side. Place the front piece on its side and line it up perpendicular to the side piece, so the side piece end is overlapped by the front piece. Connect the two pieces with the drill and screws, placing the screws one inch apart to make it sturdy. The number of screws per side will vary depending on the size of the box. Connect the second side piece to the opposite end of the side piece in the same manner as the first side piece.
- 5). Line the back piece up to the box frame so it overlaps both ends of the side pieces. Attach the back piece with the drill and screws to complete the box frame, leaving a one-inch space between the screws.
- 6). Place the bottom piece on top of the frame and line it up with the box frame just constructed. Connect the bottom piece with the drill and screws, so the bottom piece is connected to the perimeter of the box frame. Again, have an inch space between the screws. When done, flip the box right side up.
- 7). Line the hinges up to the length-side of the lid piece of the box and spread them evenly apart. Divide the lengthy side into thirds and place one hinge at the one-third mark and one at the two-thirds mark. Attach the hinges using two screws per hinge, using the holes on the hinges. The opposite end of the hinges will hang loosely off the lid piece when done.
- 8). Line the lid piece up to the box, so the ends of the hinges hang loosely into the box. Connect the hinges to the box using two screws per hinge and screwdriver, so they are attached to the inside of the box. Use the holes in the hinges to connect them to the box. Place the garbage cans and recycling bin into the storage box.
