Baby Tears
Baby tears (Helxine soleirolii) is a small plant commonly used in very small terrariums with a mature height of 1 to 3 inches. Baby tears is mosslike in appearance and grows into a dense mat with its fleshy stems and miniature round foliage. The plant has a moderate tolerance for heat and a moderate watering requirement. The spreading growth habit of baby tears makes it well-suited for use as a ground cover. Baby tears prefers a humid environment and grows best in damp soil. The fine textured plant blooms with inconspicuous, tiny flowers.
Creeping Fig
Creeping fig (Ficus pumila) is listed as a very small plant ideal for small terrariums by the University of Missouri Extension. The plant has a mature height of 1 to 3 inches and spreads in a thick, matlike and cascading growth. Creeping fig has heart-shaped foliage that clings and climbs on any surface including other plants. The plant can grow up to several feet in length. Propagate the plant by taking tip cuttings and inserting in damp soil.
Earth Star
Earth star (Crypanthus spp. ) is a popularly used, very small terrarium plant with a full height of 1 to 3 inches, as cited by the University of Missouri Extension. The plant has fine-toothed, stiff foliage that grows in rosettes. The foliage color is a distinct reddish green with bands across the foliage. Earth star grows very close to the soil with a spreading growth habit. Earth star has a medium texture and a minimal requirement for water, preferring areas of bright light and high humidity. The plant is well tolerant of heat. Divide the offsets produced by the plant for easy propagation.
