    • 1). Cut long parallel lines into the sheet vinyl of the existing floor, taking the lines across the whole floor. Set them about four feet apart. Scrape up the strips of flooring one by one, using your heavy floor scraper.

    • 2). Go over the surface with a razor scraper to get it smooth and flat. Clean it with household floor cleanser and a mop. Let it dry for 24 hours.

    • 3). Snap two intersecting lines over the floor with your chalk snapline, meeting in the middle of the room and dividing the floor into four squares. Adjust the lines to be exactly perpendicular to each other by setting a carpenter's square at the intersection.

    • 4). Pull the waxpaper backing off one new tile. Set the tile to the floor at one of the four corners of the intersection. Press down on the tile surface with both hands, attaching it fully to the floor.

    • 5). Pull the waxpaper off a second tile. Butt one edge of it along the edge of the first tile, then drop it in place, getting a tight seam. Repeat, laying tiles and building out in a grid pattern along the lines toward the walls.

    • 6). Cut the tiles for the edge of the floor, by the walls, by scoring them alongside your carpenter's square, then snapping them in two. Set them so the sides you cut face the wall.
