How to Paint a Finished Cabinet
- 1). Remove any doors or drawers from the cabinet. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the inside and place them in a safe place to prevent loss. Remove the handles and pulls from these pieces and store the screws separately.
- 2). Sand the old finish from any doors or drawers first. Then sand the main cabinet. Use a medium- to fine-grit sandpaper.
- 3). Wipe off dust left from the sanding, using a clean cloth.
- 4). Prime the cabinet parts. Use a clean rag to apply the primer to all parts of the cabinet. A rag does not leave brush marks, so the finish will be smooth. Allow the primer to dry for at least 24 hours.
- 5). Paint the cabinet parts, using a small paintbrush. Paint the main area of the cabinet, using a roller for the smoothest result. Allow it to dry for at least 24 hours.
- 6). Finish the project by adding a coat of lacquer. This finish will protect the paint and give the cabinet a shine. Allow it to dry for at least 24 hours before you put the cabinet back together.
